WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Film and TV crews in New Hanover County and surrounding areas have been pretty common for the past couple of years. A lot of filming takes place at Screen Gems Studios, but a lot is also done on location.
Along with the bragging rights of a town or business getting to say Safe Haven or Iron Man 3 shot nearby, crews sometimes leave things better than what they were before filming.
Filming for the movie Tammy, which stars Melissa McCarthy, has wrapped up shooting at the restaurant Two Fat Ladies Over a Simmering Pot on Dawson Street in Wilmington. Workers with Acme Cleaning Service spent part of the day at the restaurant restoring the place to normal Wednesday.
"We normally clean a set before they film and after they film," said Pam McGeehan, owner of Acme Cleaning Service. "We clean up any messes that were made. So people can get ready to bring furniture back in and get back to normal business."
Gayleane White, co-owner of Two Fat Ladies, says when the restaurant gets back to business, loyal customers will notice several changes that were done by the film crew.
"In the movie, it doesn't look nothing like our restaurant," she said. "It's a fast food place. The paint, the color. Everything has changed."
White says that the crew asked if they wanted them to transform the restaurant back to what it looked like before filming, but they liked the changes.
"A big relief…we didn't have to do it because they did it for us," she said. "We saved money. There was wallpaper, and we knew we had to take all that down, do some maintenance to the wall and then paint and all that. They did all that."
A spokeswoman for the city of Wilmington says that when crews from the movie Mary and Martha filmed at city hall last year, they painted several walls there.
