Flames engulfed a Mesa home used by hoarders Wednesday morning, presenting a dangerous situation for firefighters and neighbors.
The first-alarm fire began about 5 a.m. near Guadalupe just east of Loop 101 and rapidly spread through the home, said Forrest Smith of the Mesa Fire Department.
Smith said firefighters from Chandler and Tempe assisted the Mesa Fire Department.
Passers-by were knocking on windows to wake up the occupants, firefighters said.
Smith said once the fire scene was determined to be a hoarding situation, firefighters went on the defensive and families in nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.
Smith said hoarding situations present the types of "fires that kill firefighters."
Smith said the previous occupants left the home in disarray and a man hired by the owners to clean the home was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
No cause had been determined.
No other information was immediately available.
