7 cited for trespassing at Quabbin Reservoir

State police have cited seven people for trespassing at the Quabbin Reservoir around midnight on Tuesday.

Police say the five men and two women live in Amherst, Cambridge, Sunderland, Northampton and New York City. State police say the seven hail from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

The seven said they were recent college graduates and were chemical engineers. State police say the group told the responding officer that they wanted to see the Quabbin and noted their education and career interests.

State police say all seven were checked for hits within international criminal justice databases. No warrants, detainers or advisories have been found for any of the individuals.

The state police notified the Springfield office of the FBI who is going to increase patrols around public water supplies following the incident.

State police emphasized that there is no evidence the seven were committing any crime beyond trespassing.

The seven are due to appear in Hampden County Superior Court in Springfield to face their trespassing citations. Their names are being withheld pending scheduling of the court appearance.
