Mount Juliet plan could leave softball league striking out

A local softball league could be down to its final innings. For years, members of the Mount Juliet adult softball league have been playing at Mundy Park, but officials are hammering out plans to turn three of the four ball fields into youth football fields.

The Mount Juliet Board of Commissioners will meet Monday to discuss details of the new lease agreement with the city's youth football league, and the plan seems to be striking out with some.

Vickie Sprinkles has been playing on the fields for more than a decade with the women's open league - one of 51 adult softball teams in Mount Juliet.

"I was devastated the thought of not having a place to play," Sprinkles said.

Mount Juliet Parks Manager Rocky Lee said city leaders have been kicking the idea around of moving youth football from Charlie Daniels Park to Mundy Park for years.

"Mt. Juliet football has outgrown this little park," Lee said.

More than space, Lee said, is the concern about safety.

"When they're having practice, they're parked all the way up to the church parking lots, and it's just little kids running in and out of this parking lot and eventually a kid's gonna get hit and hurt. It's just a matter of time," Lee said.

Sprinkles said she only got wind of the proposal last week, and she and her fellow ballplayers are taking to Facebook to express their concerns.

"I believe they should have at least said something. I think the more people that know the more people that might have better ideas," she said.

If approved, crews will begin converting three of the four fields the first week in July. The first order of business will be to rip up the fence and backstops. Next, crews will pull up the bleachers before finally putting in new sod.

By the end of July, the kids will be able to take the field.

Lee said the adult league would still be able to play at Mundy Park, but the league will play fewer games and will be limited to 40 teams.
