WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers are investigating a shooting that happened at an annual Mother's Day event at Robert Strange Park Sunday.
A man, approximately 30 years old, was taken to the hospital to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds, according to Lt. Blanton with Wilmington Police. He said the injuries are not life-threatening.
Blanton said the man is not from the Wilmington area, and someone drove him to the hospital before emergency crews arrived on scene.
Neighbors said they were concerned something was going to happen hours before the shooting took place and called police several times.
Police logs confirm several calls were made to warn officers things were escalating.
The first call came in a little after 6:00 p.m. expressing concern that there were 10-15 people in blue and another 10-15 in red. The caller was worried about "possible gang activity" and that "something is about to go down."
According to the log, an officer stopped at the area for about 15 minutes, but reported no gang problem in the area.
Two more calls came in just before 7:00 p.m.
One caller said they saw about 20 people in red who were in a gang. The caller said they were having an issued with the gang "The Port Brothers and are trying to resolve their issue at this time." The caller, again, expressed concern things would escalate and requested an officer stay in the area.
According to the log, an officer stopped in the area for about a minute and reported only seeing a group of people on a bench, with only two wearing red hats.
About an hour later – shots were fired.
The technology Shot Spotter did not detect the gunfire, according to Blanton.
The same weekend last year, one person was shot and killed in the same area. Neighbors say the group that held the Mother's Day event will also be holding one on Father's Day, but say they hope to have extra security at that time.
