WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Michael Bass knocked out three hits and drove in five runs while Kelly Secrest tossed five strong innings of relief as UNCW raced past William & Mary, 11-4, in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action on Saturday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks (36-16, 17-6) maintained their hold on first place and clinched one of two byes in the upcoming conference championship later this month. The Tribe (32-19, 15-9), meanwhile, dropped back to 2.5 games behind the Seahawks and stayed in second place.
Bass made the most of his final home game at Brooks Field on Senior Day, doubling twice and driving in a career-high five runs. His bases-loaded double in the eighth gave the Seahawks an 8-4 lead after the Tribe plated two runs in the top of the frame to make it a one-run game.
Secrest (3-1) picked up the win tossing the final five innings and allowing two runs on four hits. It was his second relief stint of at least five innings this season.
Jason Inghram (7-5) took the loss for the Tribe, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in five and 1/3 innings.
UNCW's Ryan LaGrange collected three RBI's on two hits, including his fourth homer of the season. Luke Dunlap, and Luis Renvill both added two-hit outings at the plate.
Jackson Shaver and Derek Lowe had two hits apiece as the top four hitting slots of the W&M lineup went 1-for-14 on the afternoon.

How it happened: UNCW plated single runs in the fourth through sixth innings to take a 5-2 lead. Josh Abshire (1-1, 2 BB, 1 Sac) singled in Matt Keeler, who opened the fourth with a double to left. In the fifth, Bass doubled in Renvill, who singled to lead off the fifth. Finally in the sixth, it was Bass again as he singled with two out to score Abshire, who drew a leadoff walk.
Inside the numbers: UNCW plated five two-out RBI's on the game and went 10-for-22 with runners on base … Bass was 3-for-3 in RBI opportunities … UNCW pitchers held the Tribe to 1-for-7 with RISP … W&M also was just 3for-12 with runners on base … All three RBI's by LaGrange were with two out.
Notes: The Seahawks closed out their home schedule with a 25-9 record … UNCW also improved to 31-1 when leading after seven innings … The Seahawks are now 14-1 versus lefthanded starters … Matt Keeler and Tyler Molinaro extended their hitting streaks to six and five games, respectively … Terence Connelly, meanwhile, has reached base in 22 straight games … He also increased his UNCW freshman record of hit by pitches to 15.
