LELAND, NC (WECT) - Family, friends, and community members took to the links on Saturday to celebrate and honor the life of a hometown hero who died earlier this year.
Kyle Jones was a detective with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office. He passed away in January because of a viral illness at the age of 41.
Golfers at the Magnolia Greens Golf Plantation in Leland teed-off in his honor on Saturday as part of the first annual Kyle Jones Memorial Golf Tournament.
All proceeds will benefit his daughter Reyde's college fund.
Kyle's Mother, Barbara Jones is sharing the memory of her son by helping others.
"With the help of God, church, family and friends," said Jones. "It's cleansing for my soul. Anything I can do for my kids to help raise money for Reyde's college fund, it's a blessing."
Organizers plan to make this an annual event. For more information, click here.
