Gun sale scammers target seniors

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – According to police, there's been a large increase in online fraudulent gun sales.  Officials say the crooks are targeting the older population in our area.

Police say gun sales have skyrocketed due to the fear of stricter gun control laws. As a result, criminals are capitalizing.

Charlie Blalock is the Community Resource Officer for the Oak Island Police Department.  He says he's gotten lots of phone calls and emails from people reporting gun sale scams online.

According to Blalock, criminals are trying to entice the buyer by posting pictures and descriptions hijacked from online firearm ads.  Then, scammers ask for money in return for a gun.  After the cash is sent, the gun never arrives.

The Oak Island Police Department has posted a message on their website to alert consumers.  Blalock says the criminals are targeting the older population.

"They target them, they seek them out," said Blalock.  "The best weapon we have against it is education and communication."

Blalock says he feels like the community watch program has helped people become more aware of potential scammers in the area.
