WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is investigating a sanitary sewer overflow that happened in Wilmington Tuesday.

According to CFPUA, a manhole behind the 400 block of Alpine Drive overflowed because of an accumulation of heavy grease in the pipes from the Mineral Springs Outfall.

CFPUA said approximately 1,750 gallons spilled from the manhole and reached a small creek that flows into Burnt Mill Creek.

Crews were able to stop the leak within an hour of receiving a call about the overflow. According to CFPUA, staff cleaned the area with vacuum trucks in an effort to lessen the environmental impact.

CFPUA's Environmental Management staff is performing water quality monitoring in several nearby locations to determine the impact of the spill.
