NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Two New Hanover County high schools have new principals. The board made the announcements at its meeting Tuesday night.
Dr. Steven Sullivan has been named principal of Hoggard High School.
Jackson Norvell has been named principal of Ashley High School.
School Resource Officers
Also Tuesday night, school board members discussed funding for School Resource Officers.
The county did not include funding for SROs in its preliminary budget.
Some commissioners indicated they're waiting for the results of a school security analysis before moving forward with funding the positions. However, school board members said the assessment won't be conducted until late this summer, after budget decisions are already voted on by the county.
School board members indicated they would like to hold another meeting with commissioners to discuss the issue.
A date for that meeting has not been scheduled.
Sheriff Ed McMahon recommended adding more deputies to cover elementary schools in the district.
The board also heard from several people from the Anchors Bend neighborhood.
The students in the community have been assigned to Castle Hayne Elementary School.
Parents who attended the meeting indicated the school is too far from their home and they would prefer their children be assigned to Ogden Elementary School.
However, Valita Quattlebaum, district spokesperson, said Ogden is overcrowded.
School board members will discuss the school assignment more at its meeting on May 21.
