Rescue of OH kidnapping victims renews hope for families of missing persons

Posted: Updated:

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The news of three Ohio women who were found years after being abducted has sparked a renewed feeling of optimism for families who hope to one day find their missing loved ones alive.

As soon as the news out of Cleveland broke, Monica Caison's phone started ringing around 5 a.m. at the CUE Center for Missing Persons in Wilmington.

"A lot of media calls," said Caison, the organization's founder. "But also families. They're excited they want to share in the victory. It's kind of like the Super Bowl. Everyone wants to talk about the Super Bowl and that's kind of where we are with this miracle story."

But, while most of the nation is celebrating the discovery in Cleveland, Caison believes it's also a teaching moment.

"We encourage investigators every day in the cases we work, do not throw a tip aside and put that in a low priority, just because you believed something happened in this case," she said. "Whether there's evidence or not, there could be something else going on. We don't know until we have the end result."

All three women in Ohio were found just miles from where they were abducted, which is why Caison says the CUE Center's tactics are useful.

"The old-fashioned get on the ground, go door-to-door and do a knock and tell," said Caison. "Ask people to let you in their home. If they don't have anything to hide, they'll let you in. Sometimes, the good old fashion work of getting into the community pays off."

Caison says that the biggest lesson out of this story is to always have hope.

"I had a mother call me this morning and said, 'See? I'm not crazy. My daughter could still be out there.' And we agree," said Caison.

Caison says the case out of Cleveland has brought sadness to some families who have people missing. She says that many of them have called her asking when will it be their turn to find their loved one.
