LORIS, SC (WMBF) - A Tabor City man charged with kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct has been sentenced to spend more than two decades behind bars.
The victim in that crime was traveling through an unfamiliar Horry County town in May of 2012 when she stopped at a gas station for a soda and headache medicine, and returned to find an unwelcome visitor.
It wasn't until the victim had driven nearly a mile from the gas station in the direction of Tabor City that she noticed someone else was in her car.
The male suspect, unknown to the victim, appeared from the back of her van saying he needed a ride and didn't intend to hurt her. He then gave her directions to turn down several roads she, being unfamiliar with the Loris area, did not recognize.
The suspect reportedly made the victim stop the van and turn off the lights, but the victim was unsure where they stopped. The report says the suspect then forced the victim to perform sexual acts on him, before removing her clothes and forcing himself on her.
The victim says the suspect then made her drive in the direction of Tabor City, and after traveling only a couple of miles, the suspect jumped out of the vehicle. The suspect had told the victim he had a gun, but he never presented one.
The victim went to a local hospital and met police to report the crime. She reported that while they were driving, the suspect gave her personal information about himself, including his age and his criminal record.
The victim's description of the suspect and further investigation aided police in identifying the suspect as 32-year-old Anthony Jemell Grate.
He was charged with armed robbery, criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping.
On May 7, 2013, Honorable Judge Larry B. Hyman sentenced Grate to 25 years without parole on the criminal sexual conduct charge.
