RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Dozens of nonviolent demonstrators are facing charges in the second week of protests against Republican policies at North Carolina's General Assembly.

Twenty-seven members of the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and other activists were arrested Monday by Raleigh and General Assembly police.

General Assembly Police Chief Jeff Weaver says all are likely to face misdemeanor charges similar to the 17 NAACP protesters arrested last Monday. Those arrested this week include members of the social justice group Raging Grannies, several university professors, and the son of state NAACP president Rev. William Barber.

Protesters are directing their anger at Republican action on Medicaid, unemployment insurance, the earned income tax credit, education and voting rights. The GOP has controlled the Legislature since 2011.
