Eight-run 6th sparks Seahawks past Northeastern

UNCW Press Release

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Matt Keeler's two-run homer highlighted an eight-run sixth inning as UNCW rallied past Northeastern for a 9-5 victory to win the Colonial Athletic Association weekend series on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks clinched a CAA tournament berth with the win and improved to 34-14 and 15-5 in the league. NU, meanwhile, dropped to 25-20 and 9-12. UNCW is the only school in the history of the CAA to participate in all 28 editions of the league's championship tournament.

Jack Lane (2-1) picked up the win in relief, tossing a pair of shutout innings. Kelly Secrest posted his seventh save, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced.

NU starter Kevin Ferguson (5-4) suffered the loss despite cruising through the first five innings. He surrendered six runs, five earned, on 10 hits.

Keeler finished with two hits and four runs batted in while Luke Dunlap added two hits and two RBI's. Five different Seahawks had at two hits on the afternoon.

Brad Burcroff and John Puttress each had three hits while Sean Lyons finished with two hits, including his first homer of the season, and knocked in two runs at the bottom of the order.

Next up: The Seahawks visit fifth-ranked NC State on May 7 at 6 p.m. in the final game of the home-and-home series.

How it happened: Northeastern built a 5-1 lead though five and 1/2 innings before the Seahawks came to life. UNCW sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and scored eight runs on six hits to take a 9-5 lead.  Keeler belted his second homer of the season with a man on and Luke Dunlap and Keeler again added two-run singles to fuel the uprising.

Inside the numbers: UNCW went 0-10 with less than two outs in the first five innings, but was 6-8 with two outs during that span … The Seahawks finished 10-15 with two out, but failed to get the leadoff hitter on base in any inning for the first time this season and first since a 4-2 loss at UNC on May 8, 2012 … UNCW's bullpen held NU to 2-10 hitting with runners on base.

Notes: Luis Renvill owns UNCW's longest active hitting streak at three games … Terence Connelly and Ryan LaGrange extended their on base streaks to 18 and 17 games, respectively … Kelly Secrest owns UNCW's record for saves by a lefthander with seven and is tied for fifth on the single season list … Luke Dunlap leads the Seahawks with 14 two-out RBI's … UNCW pitchers combined to walk just three hitters and strikeout 25 in the series.
