Seahawks hold off Huskies, 7-6

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Christian Wolfe's three-run homer keyed a five-run first inning and UNCW held off a late charge by Northeastern for a 7-6 win in the opening game of a Colonial Athletic Association series at Brooks Field on Friday.

The Seahawks improved to 33-13 overall and 14-4 in the league. They also avoided their first three-game losing skid of the season as they upped their home record to 22-7. The Huskies, meanwhile, dropped to 24-19 and 8-11 in the CAA.

Freshman Terence Connelly led the Seahawks with three hits and a walk. Drew Farber added two hits. For Wolfe, it was his second homer of the season.

Aaron Barbosa and Michael Foster each collected three hits for the Huskies, who entered the game last in the league with a .265 average, but out hit UNCW, 11-10. Both also scored two runs.

Mat Batts (8-2) earned the win despite allowing six runs on 10 hits over six and 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

James Mulry (2-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits and five walks in three-plus innings.

Next up: The series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start. RHP Jordan Ramsey (6-3, 2.24 ERA) will make the start for the Seahawks while the Huskies send RHP Nick Berger (4-5, 3.43 ERA) to the bump.

How it happened: The Seahawks jumped in front with five runs in the first inning, four coming with two out. Ryan LaGrange struck out, but reached safely on a wild pitch. Matt Keeler followed with a walk and Christian Wolfe homered to right center for a 4-0 lead. Luis Renvill plated the final run of the frame with a RBI single.

Inside the numbers: The Seahawks landed a season-high tying seven leadoff hitters on base, but went 4-for-21 with runners on base … UNCW did plate four runs with two outs on the evening … NU went just 1-for-9 with two out … The Seahawks drew a season-high 12 walks.

Notes: The Seahawks stranded a season-high 15 runners on base, two short of the school record of 17 … Michael Bass doubled to lead off the game and extend his on-base streak to 42 games and his current hitting streak to nine … Also extending hitting streaks were Luke Dunlap (16) and Ryan LaGrange (15) … UNCW is now 9-3 in one-run contests … UNCW is now 13-6-1 all-time against the Huskies and 7-0 at Brooks Field in the series.
