Sunset Beach officer terminated, investigation closed

SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) – An officer with the Sunset Beach Police Department has been terminated from his position, according to the town administrator.

Officer Jamie Clemmons was under investigation after a DWI arrest he made was dismissed last month by the Brunswick County District Attorney's Office.

Sunset Beach Police Chief Lisa Massey decided to do an internal investigation instead of inviting an outside agency to handle it.

District Attorney Jon David said his office has completed the review on all pending cases by Clemmons.

"In order to ensure the integrity of the system the, DA's office has voluntarily dismissed all the cases in which Clemmons testimony would have been needed to get a conviction," said David.

David also stated that it involved five DWI cases and multiple other traffic infractions, but the total amount of cases is unknown.

According to the termination letter, the move was based upon Clemmons' "failure to follow rules and regulations of standard operating procedures" and for "conduct unbecoming a public officer or employee."

According to an arrest report, Clemmons arrested Patricia Barbour for DWI last May. Her son, Bobby Barbour, said the incident happened at the Sunset Beach Police Department and that many things Clemmons said about the incident didn't add up.

Bobby Barbour claims Clemmons had conflicting information on the written and typed reports regarding the same incident.
