WASHINGTON, DC (WECT) – Congressman Mike McIntyre plans to present a check for nearly $1 million to more than a dozen fire departments in Duplin County.

McIntyre's office said in an email on Wednesday the federal funds will be used to buy VIPER radios for the departments, which will improve response time and service for residents.

"This is a grand slam for Duplin County!" McIntyre said in an email statement. "Ensuring that our fire departments have the resources and tools they need to do their job is a priority for me, and I am pleased these funds are coming home to help Duplin County!"

McIntyre will present checks for the funds in a ceremony Thursday, May 2 at 4:00pm, at the Beaulaville Fire Department on Wilson Street.

In a release, McIntyre's office said the funds came from the United States Department of Homeland Security through its firefighters assistance program.
