CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – Family members of the victims in an assault in Carolina Beach say their loved one were outnumbered Saturday night.
Marie Balloon said her daughter boarded the Moonlight Cruise for a cousin's 16th birthday party. A group from Clinton was also aboard this ship, but law enforcement report no problems between the two initially.
When the boat docked, the two groups went their separate ways but Balloon said that's when the problem started. As her family and friends organized rides for the teenagers, Balloon said someone from the Clinton group told the others that they weren't allowed on his party bus.
In a matter of minutes, Balloon said the situation escalated to an assault. She said initial estimates of two groups with 30 people each is off. The group of people from the Wilmington area was mostly teenage girls, leaving the male chaperones outnumbered, according to her account.
"I want people to know that they endangered a whole lot of children," she said.
By the end of the night, four people were rushed to the hospital. One man who needed emergency brain surgery because of his injuries is now considered to be in good condition, according to staff at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Balloon said her daughter watched as people attacked her relatives, and the teenager even suffered a hit to the head herself.
"My daughter is traumatized," said Balloon.
This mother said she is taking Carolina Beach Police officers at their word that someone will be charged for this assault. If it doesn't happen in a week or so, Balloon said she plans to take out her own warrants.
We reached out to Carolina Beach Police for more information and were told that the detective on the case is currently working diligently with witnesses to lead to an arrest.
