WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion at UNCW has accepted a position at the University of South Florida.
Dr. Jose Hernandez, who has served at UNCW for nearly five years, will take a position as Chief Diversity Officer in Florida as of July 1.
"While we are saddened to see him go, we can also appreciate that this is actually a return to USF for Dr. Hernandez, as he served there for just over 8 years prior to coming to UNCW," said UNCW Provost Denise Battles in a campus email Tuesday.
According to Battles, Hernandez has been a powerful force in opening the dialogue surrounding diversity – both on the UNCW campus and beyond.
"His commitment to bringing quality programs on diversity and inclusion to our campus, including the very successful UNCW Diversity Conference, has been matched only by his dedication to his students and colleagues," said Battles.
UNCW said an interim leader for the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion will be announced soon.
