CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – The details are limited about a melee in Carolina Beach that sent three people to the hospital, but the 911 calls received by emergency operators Saturday night provide an eye-witness account.
"Oh my God they're stomping on him," one woman screamed over the phone. "There are people on the ground."
An assault involving two groups of about 30 people each clashed in the streets and parking lots near Carl Winner Drive.
"There's at least 40 or 50 people here," a man said to the 911 operator. "They're chasing one guy around."
One of the groups rode a party bus from Clinton, North Carolina for a trip on a Moonlight Cruise in Carolina Beach. Three victims from Wilmington were rushed to the hospital. One man is in the Intensive Care Unit after emergency brain surgery, according to police. He was hit in the head with a brick.
Witnesses told New Hanover County dispatchers that they could see people using knives, poles and a shovel as weapons. One bystander worried that her brother was on the ground and not moving.
What sounds like several people kept a man from entering the chaotic scene to help his friend.
"They're beating him," he yelled. "I can't let them beat him!"
Alcohol was involved, according to detectives. They expect to serve arrest warrants sometime this week.
