FAIRMONT, NC (WMBF) – The Robeson County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 assault-in-progress call Friday afternoon, and arrived to find a man killed, according to Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealy.

Sheriff Sealy said the call came in from a neighbor around 2:50 p.m., and deputies arrived within five-to-six minutes, but were too late. In the backyard of 499 Price Rd. in Fairmont, they found a 57-year-Forrest Oxendine Jr. badly beaten, and dead.  Oxendine Jr. did not live at this location.

The cause of death has not yet been confirmed by the coroner. Sheriff Sealy said they have a person of interest, and the case is under investigation by Homicide/Major Crime detectives, along with North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
