Local store employees honored Friday after helping police capture suspect

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Employees of a local business were honored Friday afternoon after helping police recover stolen property and assisting in the arrest of the suspect who was charged with the crime.

Tom Hackler, founder of the Green Loop community watch group presented certificates around 1:30 p.m. at Play It Again Sports located at 3530 S. College Road.

According to police, a resident of Shinn Point Rd. discovered Tuesday morning that someone had broken into his vehicle and stolen his golf clubs. WPD officer Darrell Moore responded to take the report and advised the victim to make calls too area businesses most likely to be approached by the thief, including Play It Again Sports.

Police say a short time after receiving the victim's call, an alert employee at Play It Again Sports was approached by a man offering to sell the golf clubs matching the description of the stolen property.

Police say the employee notified her manager who called 911. Officer Moore heard the call go out and quickly responded to the store.

As a result, the stolen clubs were recovered and the suspect was arrested.

According to police, Charles Joseph Whitehurst, 26, of Wilmington, has been charged with breaking and entering, larceny and obtaining property by false pretense/ attempt.
