Athletes compete for gold in 2013 NHC Special Olympics

More than 500 athletes took to the track at UNCW for the 2013 New Hanover County Special Olympics Spring Games. More than 500 athletes took to the track at UNCW for the 2013 New Hanover County Special Olympics Spring Games.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - More than 500 athletes took to the track at UNCW for the 2013 New Hanover County Special Olympics Spring Games.

Students from New Hanover County schools along with athletes from other organizations will participate in many track and field events, including 100 and 50 yard dashes, softball and tennis ball throws, and long jumps.

Athletes receive ribbons for first, second and third place finishes.

Wilmington police and New Hanover Sheriffs deputies took part in opening ceremonies, and Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley officially opened this years games.
