Heavy rains bring flooding to Baton Rouge area

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Police said high water was reported on several roadways throughout Baton Rouge because of heavy rainfall Wednesday morning.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reported problems in the following areas:

North and South I-110/Fuqua

Lobdell/Florida

Acadian/I-10

4900 Jamestown/Congress

E. Industrial/Wooddale

1400 City Park/Dalrymple

Harding/Scenic

Acadian/Perkins

400-900 North Blvd.

Officers added this is just a partial list and while some areas are draining quickly, some are not.

Drivers were urged to stay off the streets if possible until the storm passed through the area or if they had to be out and about to be extremely careful about standing water on roadways.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning, tornado watch and several severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of the WAFB viewing area Wednesday.

A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect for Ascension, St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes until 11:30 a.m.

A tornado warning for parts of Ascension Parish ended just before 11 a.m. The warning for East Baton Rouge and Iberville parishes expired before 10:30 a.m. Other warnings expired earlier in the morning.

Meteorologist Steve Caparotta said the storms are capable of producing hail and strong winds.

The tornado watch for most of southeast Louisiana and parts of southern Mississippi was scheduled to be in effect until 1 p.m. However, it ended in many areas before 11 a.m.

The following Louisiana parishes remained in the watch zone:

Ascension

Assumption

Jefferson

Lafourche

Livingston

Orleans

Plaquemines

Pointe Coupee

St. Bernard

St. Charles

St. Helena

St. James

St. John the Baptist

St. Tammany

Tangipahoa

Terrebonne

Vermilion

Washington

 

The following Mississippi counties are also included:

Hancock

Pearl River

Walthall
