SAMPSON COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A log truck driver accused of striking and hitting a child getting off a school bus is now facing DWI charges, according to Highway Patrol.
Authorities say Johnny Allen Spell was driving a tractor trailer log truck Tuesday afternoon around 3:30 on Highway 421.
A school bus was stopped in the south bound lane of US 421 with emergency equipment activated, while 7-year-old Alyiah McKenzie Morgan, of Harrels, was getting off.
Authorities say the tractor-trailer hauling timber passed the bus, hit the child and continued on.
Morgan died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
Spell was spotted 25 miles east of Fayetteville in a town called Autryville, according to Trooper G. Steffens. He's now facing charges of:
Alyiah was a first grade student at Union Elementary School in Clinton. According to WNCN, the school is providing grieving students and staff opportunities to talk and share. The principal told the media outlet professional counselors were at the school Wednesday.
