WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Wrightsville Beach Mayor David Cignotti says he does not plan to run for a third term as the leader of the New Hanover County beach community.
In a statement released to the public, Cignotti said, "After much thought and many conversations with my wife, Susan, I have decided not to seek a third term as mayor. I have never believed in waiting until the last minute to announce one's political intentions, thus informing everyone now provides ample time for those interested in running for mayor to give it proper consideration.
This is my 14th year of involvement in town affairs, 6 on the planning board and 8 in elected office, not to mention serving on a variety of other boards. Serving the citizens of Wrightsville Beach and working with our town's staff has been the biggest honor of my life. I will continue to work hard to represent the majority of our citizens through the end of my current term.
To put this announcement into perspective and to add a little humor, I have attached a picture from 1994, the year I was first appointed to the planning board. As you can see, I was just a "tyke" ... not even a gray hair! I am already looking forward to my new job, that being to totally enjoy stress free living in the greatest beach town in America! (:"
Cignotti beat incumbent mayor Steve Whalen in 2009.
