FORT FISHER, NC - (WECT) - Hundreds of people laced up their running shoes and hit the pavement to celebrate Earth Day this weekend. The Fort Fisher Aquarium held their 5th Annual Race for the Planet on Sunday.
Organizers were hoping to attract about 300 runners. They say the race not only helps out the aquarium, but also gets people, especially children, thinking about the importance of protecting the earth.
"They see families running together, people exercising and people thinking about the earth and what to do to protect it," said Robin Nalepa, with the aquarium. "You know, that's what we want and encourage people in their every day activities to think about health and taking care of the planet."
Runners got to go to the aquarium for free after the race. There were also stations set up where participants could see some of the animals, like snakes.
