Bass powers Seahawks past Patriots

FAIRFAX, Virginia – Michael Bass had four hits and five relievers combined to limit George Mason to three runs over the final seven and 2/3 innings as UNCW defeated GMU, 8-3, to earn a Colonial Athletic Association series win on Saturday at Spuhler Field.

The Seahawks raised their record to 29-11 overall on the season and improved to 11-2 in conference play. The Patriots, meanwhile, dropped to 13-27 and 5-15.

UNCW banged out 17 hits on the afternoon with Ryan LaGrange adding three hits and extending his hitting streak to nine games. Luke Dunlap, Matt Keeler and Steven Linkous each added two hits while LaGrange and Drew Farber, who also homered, had two RBI's apiece.

Ricky Holden (5-1) earned the win in relief of UNCW starter Jordan Ramsey, who left the game after one and 1/3 innings after being hit in the shoulder with a line drive.

Anthony Montefusco (2-5) was tagged with the loss for GMU after surrendering six runs on 11 hits in four and 2/3 innings. Montefusco had two hits on the day, including his first home run of the season.

Josh Leemhuis, who doubled and tripled, led the Patriots with three hits on the game. Patrick Esposito connected on his first round tripper of the season for GMU.

How it happened: Leading 3-2 in the fifth, UNCW erupted for three runs to extend its lead to 6-2. Corey Dick drew a one-out walk and was balked to second base for LaGrange who doubled to the wall in left center. With two out, Farber belted a 2-run homer to left center to cap the inning.

Inside the numbers: One day after struggling with runners in scoring position, UNCW went 9-for-20 in RISP situations and 6-for-13 in two-out at bats … UNCW plated three runs with two outs on the afternoon … Seahawk pitching held GMU hitless (0-5) with RISP and 1-for14 with runners on base … GMU advanced runners in just 2-of-14 opportunities.

Notes: Michael Bass had his second 4-hit game of the season and raised his average to .414 … With his leadoff double, Bass also extended his on-base streak to 36 games, second all-time at UNCW … Luke Dunlap extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the first inning … Terence Connelly and Ryan LaGrange both extended their own hitting streaks to nine games … LaGrange is hitting .541 (20-37) during his recent hitting streak … Drew Farber leads the Seahawks with 11 multiple-RBI games this season … Kelly Secrest struck out the side in the ninth.
