WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – A community in Whiteville is fighting back after a recent string of violence in their neighborhood.
The residents called a meeting saying they are unhappy about living so close to the probation office, mental health office, and sexual offenders' office. There is also a church nearby that has an elementary school and day care. That's violation of a state statute that requires sex offenders to be at least 300 ft from children because the church is less than 250 feet away. Their main concern is with the probation office—they want it moved.
Authorities say they need to call police any time they notice something strange in their neighborhood. They also say creating a neighborhood watch program could help curb crime.
