Hammerheads to start Philip Tuttle in goal in opener

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - David Irving will go with first-year Hammerheads Philip Tuttle in goal for the regular season opener against Antigua on Friday.

"He and [Troy] Hernandez have had a pretty good battle this preseason and I think he's just a little further along." said head coach David Irving. "Troy played indoor soccer and I think he's just a bit worn down."

Hernandez was expected to be the opening day starter with the departure of Alex Horwath who signed with Tampa Bay in the offseason.

"We brought Phil in so we'd have some good competition between the guys and it's worked out, they really push each other." Irving said.

The Notre Dame grad was 2-1-1 with a 1.00 goals-against average with one shutout in four regular season starts with the Harrisburg City Islanders in 2012 before going out with a torn ACL.

"I'm excited to get back on the field, it's been a long journey for me." said Tuttle. "I'm 100 percent in my mind and in my ability, I'm just ready for Friday night."
