BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A confederate cannonball from the Civil War was found two weeks ago on Bald Head Island.
According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the cannonball was dredged from the inlet, went through their piping system and ended up on the middle of the beach.
Bob Keistler with the Corps of Engineers says this cannonball was un-exploded and could have been a threat to public safety if it suddenly exploded.
"I'm just happy that nobody got hurt," said Keistler. "It could have been live and I can't tell if it was live or not but anytime you find a UXO (Unidentified Explosive Object) you need to treat it as live because somebody could get damaged. Especially considering what's happened in Boston recently, you just never know what could happen."
The corps donated the cannonball to the Fort Fisher Museum.
