Whiteville Police to talk safety with citizens amid recent crime

Posted: Updated:

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – The Whiteville Police Department will hold a community safety meeting Thursday at the Beth Israel Center.

The police chief, sergeants from the department and city officials will be at the meeting to talk with residents about their concerns about crime going on in the community.

Bolton Police Chief Edward Gilliam was recently shot in Whiteville while off duty. He was in the area when Whiteville police officers were called out for reports of two people in the street with guns.

Officials also said someone recently fired 26 gunshots into a home, causing officers to duck behind their cars in the cross fire.

That same night, police also responded in the same area to a baseball field where more than 20 shots were heard. A bullet hit an outfield fence while a team was practicing.

The police department has adjusted schedules so that officers will be able to patrol children playing at the baseball field.

The safety meeting will be held at Beth Israel Center at 269 West Frink Street, Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
