NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Middle school cheerleaders in New Hanover County can now add stunts to their cheers under specific safety guidelines.

Superintendent Dr. Rick Holliday said in a previous report cheerleading has never been considered an official sport in the Athletic Department, so it is not covered under the school system's catastrophic insurance policy.

After consulting with the school board's attorney and insurance carrier, Holliday said changes have been made and limited stunting is allowed under the following guidelines:

  • All cheer stunts will be performed on grass, rubberized track, or matted surface.
  • No single extension stunts.
  • Each stunt group will include a front spotter for extra support and safety for the flyer.
