A nine-week-old puppy was stolen Wednesday morning at a Longview pet store, and it was all caught on surveillance tape, obtained exclusively by KLTV.
Spencer, a baby shih-tzu, was stolen just after 10 a.m. from Wet Pets ‘N Critters on Loop 281 across from the Longview Mall.
Owner Laura Borens says she's hoping the public can help find her stolen puppy.
On the surveillance tape, a male customer walks towards the dog pen, looks around, then picks up Spencer.
After holding him for a few seconds, the customer then stuffs the puppy into his jacket and zips it up.
Borens said her employees realized almost immediately that the nine-week-old puppy was missing.
"We looked at the footage and sure enough, we watched the man come in and stuff the little dog inside of his coat," Borens said. "He just walked around casually, then walked behind my employee and just made his way out the door with him."
"I went around the store multiple times, making sure somebody didn't let him out," said store employee Megan Kennedy. "I thought maybe he was on the ground, or somebody was carrying him around the store. "It was very tough to know that he was gone."
After running the pet store for nearly 25 years, Borens still can't believe it happened.
"I just don't understand people," Borens said. "I don't understand why they would do such a thing."
"I was heartbroken," Kennedy said. "That is just a cruel thing to do, to steal a dog. I just can't believe it."
Borens says she is confident the thief will not get away with it.
"We have lots of friends who care about our store and we care about our puppies and they will help us find him," she said.
