WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man who many consider to be one of Wilmington's most powerful and influential mayors has died. Ben Halterman died Tuesday at Pacifica Senior Living.
He was 87 years old.
Halterman was Wilmington's mayor from 1975 until 1983. The West Virginia native is credited with bridging many racial gaps in the city. He's also remembered for jump-starting the revitalization of downtown Wilmington.
There will be a memorial service in Halterman's memory Friday at 2 p.m. at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel with military honors.
