LELAND, NC (WECT) - A proposed change in rezoning has at least one Leland resident concerned. Susan Seltzer says she picked her home more than 20 years ago because it was surrounded by an area that was zoned for single-family homes only.
Now that the zoning could change, she's worried that neighborhood dynamic will disappear.
The Town of Leland is considering re-zoning parts of the area surrounding Village Road to be general mixed use, meaning offices, retail, and residential buildings could go there. Currently, only medium density single-family homes can be built.
The area sits next to Seltzer's backyard. She says if the change in zoning goes through she will lose the privacy she now has.
"I spend a lot of time out here, my bedroom is back here so having anybody peering through," explained Seltzer. "It's R20 its an established neighborhood, leave it that way.
While any type of commercial building worries her, she especially concerned that a Veterinary Hospital could be built near her property. She says she recently received a letter from a nearby hospital explaining that if Village Road is widened the hospital will have to move further back on its property.
She says if the re-zoning is approved, the hospital could sit right outside her backyard and worries it would bring barking dogs and potentially contaminated groundwater with it. She says the groundwater is a concern because she uses a well for water.
