UNCW moves into top-five

KANNAPOLIS, North Carolina – Led by a pair of top-five efforts from Thomas Bass and Payne McLeod, UNCW finished the opening day of the Irish Creek Collegiate tied with 41st-ranked North Carolina State for third and is just five strokes off the lead.

North Carolina, who is ranked 47th, leads the 17-team field.

Davidson's Richard Fountain holds a one-stroke lead over Kennesaw State's Jimmy Beck. The Wildcats are second overall, four strokes behind the Tar Heels and one stroke ahead of the Seahawks and Wolfpack.

McLeod made his move into the top-five by carding four birdies in the second round while Bass also made his jump with five birdies on the second 18.

The tournament concludes on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
