Former air traffic controllers react to FAA's decision

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -- Plans to shut down control towers at small airports have been delayed.  The closings were supposed to begin this weekend, because of government-wide spending cuts.

The FAA now says it needs more time to deal with legal challenges to the closures.  Officials say it could happen in mid-June instead.

Former air traffic controller, Mike Arthur says it won't be easy for the folks who may lose their jobs.

"I've never been in that position so I don't know how they're feeling," said Arthur.  "As far as the economy goes, we're in a mess and somebody's going to have to take the reigns and it's going to hurt."

Despite the delay, the FAA said it will stop funding all 149 of the airport towers, which are operated by private contractors, on June 15.
