Americus runner gets huge support before Boston Marathon

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Americus resident Charlene Pennymon says she just couldn't believe it when a friend called her and offered to help pay her expenses to run in the Boston Marathon not long after she found out she'd been chosen as one of those to run, out of over a million who attempt to get in the event .

Pennymon finished 3rd in her age group at the Albany marathon earlier this year. With that finish and several other qualifying events Pennymon was one of around 30,000 chosen to be in America's most popular and difficult marathon.

But her biggest surprise came when the community decided to throw a Green Egg Grill raffle fundraiser to help pay for her trip.

The winner of the raffle was chosen today at Shiver's Lumber in Americus.  Pennymon says it's just a testament to her great friends and community, adding she can't wait for the big stage.

"I don't know I think I'll be live Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. I think I'll be like in a lost land. I'll be just amazed at it. I know I'll drink it all in and just really be excited about it.  I've been excited about it and I'm on my tapering point now where I'm not trying as hard now. I've done my hardest part and I'm just relaxing into it and getting ready for the big day but it will mean just the world to me. I'm just really excited just to have this honor and to be able to participate."

The Boston Marathon Event begins on April 12th
