Carolina Shores mayor takes a stand for gun laws

CAROLINA SHORES, NC (WECT) – Mayor Walter Goodenough is speaking out against guns, calling for stricter gun laws.

Goodenough is one of twelve mayors in the state to join the coalition, "Mayors Against Illegal Guns."

The coalition is being spearheaded by New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg. More than 900 mayors across the country have joined the coalition in support of gun regulation.

Among the goals of the coalition are to ban deadly assault weapons, high capacity magazines, and the implementation of thorough background checks.

The National Rifle Association has come out strongly against any initiative to strength gun laws, citing the infringement of the second amendment.

The coalition's goal is not to take away guns from lawful citizens.

Goodenough has been criticized for his stance by his own commissioners for joining the coalition. Goodenough says he did not sign the petition because of political reasons and that he felt it is time to come together.
