WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Police officer involved in a three-car crash Wednesday night has been named, according to WPD spokesperson Lucy Crockett.

Sgt. Mark Malone, 34, was driving a marked police car at the time of the crash, which took place at Third and Greenfield streets.

Malone, a patrol supervisor employed by the WPD since 2002, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with minor injuries and released within a few hours.

The other drivers involved were 31-year-old Aaron Baines Compton of Wilmington and 49-year-old Timothy Allen Sosbe of Kure Beach, who had an adult male passenger with him at the time.

Police cited Compton for running a red light and reckless driving after they say he ran the red light going from Greenfield Street onto Third Street, causing his pickup truck hit a U-Haul van being driven by Sosbe.

Compton's vehicle then spun around and hit the police cruiser on the driver's side door, which trapped Malone in his vehicle until he was extricated.

No one was seriously injured in the crash.
