WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - UNCW is going back to the days of high school proms and football games.
It's an experimental piece where the actors create new characters each night. The show then pits the teachers against the students on the ballroom and the football field with creative movement like cheers and fight choreography.
"It is unlike anything you've ever seen," said actress Tori Keaton. "We say that it's not a play, but it's a theatrical experience and it truly is. It is just so different."
NPL is at UNCW for an extended residency as part of the theatre department's Professional Partner Program which pairs prominent artists with students to extend their theatrical practice and imagination.
"We've really just learned so much about even like energy, the way that energy can kind of reverberate in the room," said Keaton. "Just stuff that you normally might not even really think about, but it is so meaningful to the performance. Without this certain type of energy it's like it just doesn't work."
NPL premiered PROM in Minneapolis in 2004 where it was hailed as the best production of the year.
"I think it would be a lot of fun to kind of come back and kind of relive your own prom experience through others, because a lot of people's stories are told that I think everybody can relate to," said Keaton.
