Top-ranked North Carolina blanks Seahawks

UNCW Press Release

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Chris Munnelly struck out eight and allowed two hits in seven shutout innings as top-ranked North Carolina shutout UNCW, 10-0, on Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Tar Heels (26-2) picked up their 13th straight victory in the series while the Seahawks had a four-game winning streak halted and dropped to 21-9.

Munnelly held the Seahawks hitless until the fifth when Ryan LaGrange laced a double down the left field line with one out. Benton Moss and Mason McCullough both tossed perfect innings of relief to close out the game.

UNCW starter Blaze Tart (2-3) was unable to get out of the third inning, allowing five runs on seven hits in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Colin Moran and Cody Stubbs both went 3-for-5, Moran scored twice and Stubbs knocked in two runs. Skye Bolt belted his fifth homer of the season in the fourth inning.

Hunter Ridge had UNCW's other hit on the night.

Next up: The Seahawks open a three-game non-conference series with Davidson on Apr. 5 at 6 p.m. before returning to Brooks Field for two games against the Wildcats. Apr. 6 is a 4 p.m. start and the series concludes on Apr. 7 with a 2 p.m. first pitch.

How it happened: After plating a two-out run in the first, UNC jumped on Tart in the third for four runs to take a 5-0 lead. Landon Lassiter doubled with one out to begin a streak of five straight extra base hits, including Bolt's homer to right.

Inside the numbers: UNCW allowed the leadoff hitter to reach safely just twice on the night … UNCW went 0-for-9 with two outs and had just one leadoff hitter reach safely (Ridge, single in the seventh) … Munnelly held the Seahawks to 0-for-7 hitting with two out … UNCW reliever Ricky Holden didn't allow a hit with runners on base in two inning (0-for-7).

Notes: Michael Bass (ankle) sat out his second straight game … UNC collected three two-out RBI's … Luke Dunlap had a career-long eight-game hitting streak snapped … There was one walk combined between the two teams.
