A Wilmington police officer was taken to the hospital Wednesday following a three-car crash at Third and Greenfield Streets.
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Investigators have charged a man from Wilmington in a three-vehicle crash that sent a police officer to the hospital.
The crash happened after 7 p.m., and closed the intersection of 3rd and Greenfield streets for most of the night while officers investigated and recreated the crash.
Police have charged Aaron Compton, 31, of Wilmington with a red light violation and reckless operation. Investigators say Compton ran the red light going from Greenfield Street onto 3rd Street, his pickup truck hit a U-haul van, then spun around and hit the police cruiser on the driver's side door.
The police officer got trapped inside his vehicle and had to be extricated. The officer, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital along with Compton. Neither had injuries that were believed to be serious.
Investigators say a woman and child riding in the pickup truck were not hurt, and neither was the driver of the U-haul van.
