Seahawks put away Cougars 7-2

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Evan Phillips allowed one run on four hits over six innings while Hunter Ridge and Drew Farber had two hits and two runs batted in apiece as UNCW defeated College of Charleston, 7-2, on Tuesday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks earned a split of the annual home-and-home series with the Cougars while running their record to 21-8. CofC, who beat UNCW, 7-6, earlier this season, dropped to 16-12. UNCW also moved to 17-5 at home.

Phillips (2-0), who was making his third start of the season, walked four and struck out five in pitching into the seventh inning.

Starter Ryan West (2-1) suffered the loss for CofC, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Also adding two hits for UNCW was Luke Dunlap while Terence Connelly scored twice.

Ben Boykin was the only Cougar to finish with two hits.

Up next: The Seahawks host top-ranked UNC Chapel Hill on Wednesday at 6 p.m. RHP Blaze Tart (2-2, 4.24) will make his sixth start for the Seahawks while UNC counters with RHP Chris Munnelly (1-0, 1.17), who will be making his second start.

How it happened: UNCW broke open a scoreless deadlock in the fourth on two-run bases-loaded single by Farber. Dillon Bass and Luis Renvill added a RBI double and single, respectively, in the sixth inning to push the lead to 4-0.

Inside the numbers: UNCW pitching held CofC to 1-for-9 in hitting with two out … CofC managed to advance runners in just seven of 21 opportunities … Phillips allowed just two leadoff hitters to reach base safely … UNCW collected four two-out RBI's on the night … Both teams stranded 11 runners on base.

Notes: Dillon Bass started at second base in place of Michael Bass (ankle) and finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a RBI double and run scored and fielding eight chances cleanly … Luke Dunlap extended his hitting streak to a career-long eight games … Drew Farber drove in two or more runs for the ninth time this season … Ricky Holden closed out the game with two innings of one-hit shutout relief … Evan Phillips has allowed two runs on six hits over his last nine innings covering two appearances … UNCW collected nine walks on the night … The win evened the series at 5-all.
