NORTHWEST, NC (WECT) - A woman was killed in a house fire in northern Brunswick County Monday afternoon.
According to fire officials, Bertha Denise Wilson, 55, was inside the home when the fire started and was unable to make it out.
The call came in around 4:55 p.m. Monday on 3831 Calico Court off Mt. Misery Road in Leland. Officials say the fire was under control about an hour later.
According to investigators, most of the damage from the fire was found in the kitchen, so they are focusing their efforts in that room of the house for the investigation. No foul play is suspected.
Authorities say there's no reason to believe anyone else was inside.
Wilson's family spent Tuesday afternoon cleaning the house. Her sister, Janice Zipco recollects as she flips through pictures. "You don't prepare for this because you don't expect this to hit so close to home," said Zipco. "When it does, it knocks the breath right out of you."
Zipco and the rest of Bertha's family have a plan to deal with the grief. "You take it one step at a time, one day at a time," said Zipco. "Pray for God to give you the strength to get through it."
Family members haven't made funeral arrangements yet. They plan to spend the rest of the week cleaning out the remainder of the house.
Fire officials in Brunswick County are still investigating.
