Ashtabula's police chief spoke to 19 Action News about the details surrounding the shooting at the Hiawatha Church of God and Christ in Ashtabula.
The incident happened around 1:15 outside the church.
According to the report, an adult male waited for his father to exit the church after service was over took out a gun and shot him, fatally wounding him.
The victim's mother witnessed the shooting although most of the congregation was still inside the church.
One of the church's pastors had just gone in and he described the church as packed, with attendance higher than normal due to the holiday.
The pastor that spoke to our crew said that after the man shot his father, he then went into the church and sat down. Members and visitors were reportedly chaotically trying to figure out an alternate way to exit the building to avoid the shooter.
No other people were injured.
Among the attendees were the shooter's grandmother, aunts and uncles.
Police say that the shooter still had the gun in his hands when they arrived to deal with the situation and he was told to put down his weapon.
19 Action News also spoke with the victim's loved ones about what happened on this Easter Sunday turned upside down.
Ashtabula Police is currently investigating the shooting.
