Beach blast raises thousands for Step Up For Soldiers

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A local group that helps soldiers injured in battle didn't let the rain dampen their spirits at an event to raise money for those who put their lives in danger.

Hundreds of folks attended the first ever "Step Up For Soldiers Beach Blast" at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk on Saturday.

Tickets were sold for $10 and organizers say this event will raise up to $5,000.  All proceeds go to help soldiers injured in the line of duty and also provide care packages to those who still serve.

Shannon Spicknall, the VP of Step Up For Soldiers knows the value of good support from home.  "I know what it meant to me when I was deployed overseas away from family and friends," said Spicknall.  "To get a care package or a letter from home showing that people support you, that's a big thing."

Several local businesses sponsored the event including Hurricane Ally's and The Dive in Carolina Beach.

The next Step Up For Soldiers event is the "Combat Mud Run" on April 27th.  To sign up for that event or to learn more about Step Up For Soldiers, click here.
