NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Saturday, those who live in New Hanover County had the opportunity to clean up the environment and make their homes safer at the same time.

Volunteers hosted the annual hazardous household waste collection day at Wilmington International Airport.

Hundreds of folks dropped off their old pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, gasoline, and other hazardous materials that people no longer use.

Electronic equipment like televisions and old computers were also accepted.

Organizers say this is a great way to protect the environment and protect your family and pets from hazardous items around the house.

The materials dropped off will go to the county landfill on Highway 421 for disposal.

Beginning May 15, the New Hanover County landfill will be accepting household hazardous waste six days per week.

This service is free to all residents of new Hanover County.
