NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A new state bill could triple the cost for some people to register their boat.
Right now, boat registration includes two fees: $15 for one year and $40 for three. Under the new legislation, there are 10 different fees, depending on boat length.
The proposed fees vary from $15-$150 for one year and $45-$450 for three years.
The increase in fees would help pay for dredging coastal inlets. Boat registration fees would cover 50% of the cost and the state would cover the rest.
If approved, the fees could go into place as early as next year.
